You may want to try to use the sip-audio-session script. With it, you can change the audio devices and see in the console what happens when the device is being opened, you can see the failure reason.

Then try to change the sample_rate setting, some audio devices, depending on their Linux driver can only be opened at certain sample rates like 8000 or 41000. Portaudio is not smart enough to auto-detect this for some devices while if you set the sample rate exactly to the supported value it works.
