Actually the URIs look different to me. While they share the same username, they have different hostnames.

There is no need for any magic rule. Once the user double clicked a contact or initiated any action with a certain contact selected, there is a direct reference to the contact that needs to be used, there is no need to look it up among all contacts using it's URI. With this method it won't even matter if it's the same URI with different display names.
